Kevin Keegan has told Newcastle fans they "wouldn't have had Alan Shearer" if it wasn't for Douglas Hall and Freddie Shepherd, who have resigned as chairman and vice-chairman at St James' Park.
The former Magpies manager believes that the two men, who have made way for Hall's father Sir John to resume control of the club, will regret "for the rest of their lives" disparaging remarks made about Newcastle fans.
But Keegan, who signed England captain Shearer from Blackburn for a then world record £15million in the summer of 1996, says the Toon Army should not forget the positive things that Shepherd and Hall did during their time at the Tyneside club.
"I am sad that, however inevitable their departures became, the club have lost two men who turned Newcastle into the major power as we know it today," he told The Sun.
"There would have been no Alan Shearer at Newcastle without their support and courage in breaking all records with that £15million transfer fee."
He added: "I understand the fans' anger and have no wish to make the excuse for what has been said. "But I'm not prepared to forget the good they did before the bad that finished them."

It would appear that the wife of Douglas Hall is going to make sure that the regret might linger on, she had the sense to divorce the man who labelled her a "Dog" along with the rest of the Georide famale population.
