Shepherd fights takeover
By Daniel King, Daily Mail, 2nd June 2007
Freddy Shepherd is set to resist Mike Ashley’s bid to take over Newcastle and will open the way for an overseas consortium.
Well-placed sources have indicated chairman Shepherd, who left hospital last week after health problems, is determined not to sell his 29 per cent stake to Ashley.
Friends say that Shepherd was "surprised, shocked and hurt" by Sir John Hall’s decision to sell his 42 per cent holding to the billionaire.
Other interested parties are willing to try to buy out both Shepherd and Ashley, including at least one foreign group.
Ashley is due to meet Shepherd and the rest of the board on Tuesday.
It is understood that other shareholders will not accept the billionaire’s offer of £1 per share.
Nufcmismanagement view:
If this turns out to be true then it's proof of what we have always thought, that Shepherd does not have the interests on Newcastle United at the top of his list. The claims that he is a supporter first and Chairman second will be firmly laid to rest. Actions speak louder than words, we're waiting to see the actions of this man who has given so little to the club while taking so much.
