Gordon McKeag, former Consul to Iceland (Died 29th September 2005)
Gordon McKeag was generally hated by most of the fans while chairman of the club. Even today he is hated by some and blamed by many for the long years without a trophy, some may say unfairly, especially as he was only chairman for two of those years.
McKeag took over as Chairman from Stan Seymour at one of the lowest points in Newcastle's history. The stadium was a dump, one and a half ends covered, three open to the elements as one was only covered by something which resembled a wooden bus shelter, the team were in the old Second Division and gates were sometimes as low as 10,000.
President of the Football League
McKeag was admired as an outstanding administrator with both the FA and the Football League, Gordon was elected President of the Football League in 1992 and was Chairman until 1996.
Gordon famously sat as chairman on the committee which docked Chesterfield 9 points and fined them £20,000. The inquiry dealt with 90 separate allegations against the club and its former chairman Darren Brown. While most were found not proven, the tribunal did find that there had been a breach of regulations concerning the transfer of Luke Beckett and the under reporting of gate receipts.
